Overview

If you a beginner winter recreationist, this is a great course for you as it will set you up to take your own winter trips after the course. Some of the skills that you will learn in this course include:  

- How to select, use, and care for the necessary equipment on a snowshoeing day  

- Plan, organize, equip, and safely implement a snowshoeing day  

- How to stay warm in a winter environment  

- Snow travel techniques  

- Winter ecology and Leave No Trace practices.  

 

The primary location for this trip is the Mt. Baker area. However, backcountry locations will vary depending on conditions. Plan on driving up to 2.5 hours from Seattle to the location. Potential locations are: Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park, Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Mount Saint Helens National Park  

 

A minimum of 4 people are required to run this trip. Should we not have the minimum number of participants, the amount paid will be refunded.

Itinerary

Day 1: Snowshoeing and winter navigation

 

This is a sample trip progression  

 

Participants will meet at a designated park and ride convenient for all participants. Meeting times vary but usually begin at 7:00 a.m. Please consider driving as a caravan and all driving will take place on plowed roads to the summit passes. You wil drive to a pre-established location. Chains for your vehicle will be required.  

 

Meet for a pre-trip avalanche assessment at a pre-established location. Discussion on snowshoe technique and safety in a winter environment. After lunch, there will be classes on winter ecology and navigation.  

 

As a beginner course, plan to ascend and descend up to 1,000 feet or more throughout the day. There will be longer stops for education in a cold environment. Plan on standing in the snow for up to 20 minutes at a time with long periods of physical movement.  

 

Plan on being home by 6 p.m.
