Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Famous Thermal Baths – Kiswarani Waterfall Campsite

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel at 5 a.m. to begin the famous Lares Trek to Machu Picchu. Pickup locations can be from any hotel, condo, or apartment located in the cities of Cusco, Urubamba, Huaran, or Pisaq. The journey starts with a three-hour drive through the beautiful landscape of the Sacred Valley and the Andes. Upon arriving at the Lares Hot Springs site, you will enjoy your first breakfast, accompanied by stunning views of the Andes Mountains. After breakfast, relax in the hot springs, which feature various pools ranging from freezing to hot water. These pools are filled with pure volcanic water, known for its medicinal properties and benefits for bones, stress relief, muscles, and headaches.

Following a rejuvenating soak in the hot springs, a 20-minute drive will take you to the trailhead at Punta Carretera, located at 3,300 meters (10,827 feet) above sea level. Here, you will meet your horses and riders and hand over your duffle bags to be taken to the campsite. Your trek to Machu Picchu begins with a two-hour gradual uphill hike to the first village, Kiswarani. This section of the hike passes through the potato valley area, where you will see many varieties of organic potatoes being farmed. Along the way, your guide will point out indigenous medicinal plants. Upon arrival at the village, you will enjoy your first delicious meal prepared by your trekking chef.

After lunch, the horsemen (llameros) will perform a ceremony with llamas, showcasing these beautiful animals. Llamas were considered sacred by the Incas and were fundamental to their economy. The llameros will introduce you to the llamas, explain their importance, and discuss why owning one was a sign of privilege. Although llamas are now often bred with smaller animals, they aim to preserve the tradition of the Incas by supporting the community that protects them. Llamas are pleasant and friendly animals, but be careful—they might try to kiss you!

You will have time to explore the village and visit local homes, learning about the lifestyle and ancient traditions of the people. If time permits, you will visit the schoolhouse where children still speak Quechua, their native language. You are welcome to bring toys, notebooks, or school supplies to distribute and perhaps teach the children a few words in English. The trek continues with another two-hour gradual uphill hike to the campsite, where you will be welcomed by your trekking staff with your tents already set up. Enjoy some hot drinks as the sky darkens and the stars begin to appear. Finally, relish a lovely dinner prepared on-site. After dinner, you can either continue stargazing or retire to your tent for the night.
