Mt Shasta - Avalanche Gulch with We Like It On Top

duration: 2 days

difficulty: Strenuous

group size: 6

experience: Beginner

Overview

On this 2-day summit climb via the Avalanche Gulch route, you will take an ambitious introduction to mountaineering. The trip is designed as a summit focused trip, with limited time for instruction on ice axe and crampon use, ice axe self-arrest, route finding, mountain sense, and mountain safety. This guided climb is for anyone who has a desire to learn the basic skills necessary to ascend Mt. Shasta safely, but who also has time constraints. This climb is perfect for those that wish to explore the world of alpine mountaineering but aren’t ready to move on to more technical routes. Avalanche Gulch is an incredible route and filled with historical figures boot prints.

Note that we need minimum 2 people to run this trip.

Itinerary

Day 1: Meet the guides, equipment check, and hike to base camp

On the first day of your climb, you will meet your guides in the guiding company office at Mt Shasta. After a brief introduction, the guides will conduct a complete pack check and distribute the group gear to each participant.

Once this is done, you will then carpool to the trailhead at Bunny Flat (6,860 ft/2,090 m) on Mt. Shasta’s south side. You will start hiking from the trailhead to base camp, which will likely be high camp (9,800 ft/2,9887 m) just below Helen Lake.

After getting some rest, you will be spending your afternoon refreshing your snow skills and use of ice axe and crampons.

You will then retire early in preparation for an alpine start on summit day.

Distance: 2.5-3.5mi

Elevation gain: 1,500-2,500 ft
