Overview

Explore Hokkaido at just the right time to see this northern island turn all the right colors. From the local gardens of Sapporo to the wild beech tree forests of an off-the-beaten-path village in the mountains, see how nature puts on a colourful show here earlier than the rest of the nation.

Enjoy activities like a barbeque with locals and a canoe trip down a golden-leafed river, as well as guided tours in Sapporo and Hakodate. Hokkaido may be famous for its white winters, but seeing the colors that come before the snow should be on every traveler's bucket list.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Sapporo

Welcome to autumn in Hokkaido, Japan’s northern island! Upon arrival to New Chitose Airport, you will be transferred to the hotel.

After checking in, enjoy an orientation walking tour of Sapporo with a local guide. At heart of the this northern capital is Odori Park, a 105m wide, 1.5km long promenade. Sapporo TV Tower stands at the eastern end of the parkway. Walk on to the local fish market Nijyo Market. As the day winds to a close, pass through local shopping arcade “Tanuki-Koji,” the famous food and local shopping area, to learn why Hokkaido is a gourmet destination perfect for foodies. Before parting ways with the guide, they can offer suggestions on where to try Sapporo’s best dishes, like butter ramen or lamb BBQ called Genghis Khan.

After the tour, guests are free to enjoy the evening in the city and explore Sapporo’s cuisine and nightlife.

Day 4: Sapporo to Kuromatsunai

Day 5: Kuromatsunai to Hakodate

Day 6: Explore Hakodate
