Overview

On this snowshoeing and snow camping trip for beginners, participants will learn how to camp in cold conditions in a mountainous environment, away from avalanche terrain. Cold climates in the Pacific Northwest can be challenging, and coupled with the extremes of mountain weather, it can be dangerous. Learn what knowledge, skills, and gear are needed to keep you safe and comfortable on a winter trip in the nearby mountains or on an extended expedition further into the wilderness.

The location for this trip is dependent upon weather and avalanche danger and will be determined by the guides closer to the date, after taking into account all considerations.

Snowshoes and poles are provided for class participants. We will have a gear check and a session covering snowshoe techniques, required equipment, and attire.

Participants will also learn how to camp in extreme cold weather conditions in a mountainous environment.

Itinerary

Day 1: Snow Camping

Meet at a Park and Ride in the greater Seattle area. Our course location is dependent upon weather and avalanche risk, and we will notify you of the meeting time and location before the start of your trip. We will carpool to the trailhead and go over the route plan, identifying avalanche terrain and how to avoid it. We will travel to camp, marking the route with a GPS or wands if there is off-trail travel or travel in fresh snow. Once we are at the camp, participants learn how to fortify the camp set-up with snow walls, in the event of high winds and blowing snow. Learn how to collect snow for melting water, how to position stoves for oxygen intake, and how to efficiently utilize fuel.
