Ice Climbing Introduction Course

Max 4 people Moderate difficulty Beginner experience

Overview

This three-day course introduces participants to alpine ice climbing techniques, movement principles, and technical systems on the Coleman Glacier of Mt. Baker. The seracs of the lower Coleman icefall make the perfect training ground for ice climbing, allowing students to climb short pitches of low angle to vertical ice using the safety of a top-rope.

Participants will need to bring their personal gear, but tents, cooking kits, and group climbing equipment is included in the trip.

Itinerary

Day 1: Hike Base Camp & Practice

You will meet with your guide at the Heliotrope Ridge parking area near Mt. Baker at a pre-determined time. This trip will start with a hike for about three miles on the main trail and climber’s trail, gaining 1,800 ft. to reach base camp. Depending upon the time of arrival in basecamp, we will either practice skills at camp or utilize ice cliffs on the glacier to practice skills. We will practice stacking, flipping, flaking, and coiling the rope. We will also practice belay techniques, as well as building and equalizing anchors before heading to bed.
