Join Matthew Francis on a 7-day culinary and cultural journey through Kerala, where food becomes the gateway to discovering the people, traditions, landscapes, and everyday life of southern India.
Inspired by Matthew’s experience of exploring China through food and culture, this journey is designed to go beyond simply visiting the highlights. You’ll step into local markets and kitchens, share traditional meals, meet artisans and villagers, learn time-honored cooking techniques, and experience the traditions that have shaped Kerala’s food culture.
Beginning in Cochin, you’ll explore Fort Kochi’s colonial heritage, learn to prepare traditional Kerala dishes, experience a Kathakali performance, and spend a day immersed in the fishing traditions and crafts of Kumbalangi village. From there, the journey continues into the Western Ghats, where you’ll discover Munnar’s tea plantations and mountain landscapes before experiencing Kerala’s spice-growing traditions and cuisine in Thekkady.
The journey concludes on the famous Kerala backwaters, where you’ll spend a night aboard a luxury houseboat, enjoying local meals and a canoeing village experience. Throughout the journey, you’ll have the opportunity to taste, learn, connect, and experience Kerala through the lens of its food and the people who create it.
