Overview

This Mount Baker climb is meant for beginner climbers in a good physical condition looking to start mountaineering. With its twelve active glac­i­ers and breath­tak­ing views, 10,781ft Mount Bak­er pro­vides a scenic and extreme­ly reward­ing moun­taineer­ing expe­ri­ence for both first-time climbers and sea­soned vet­er­ans alike.

- Cram­pon use and snow climb­ing tech­niques, ice axe posi­tion­ing, and self arrest techniques

- Prop­er cloth­ing and climb­ing gear for sur­vival in the high moun­tains, moun­tain weath­er, alpine ecol­o­gy, avalanche haz­ard assess­ment, and Leave No Trace ethics.

Itinerary

Day 1: Hike to the base camp

Dri­ve from Seat­tle to the Heliotrope Ridge trail­head (3,700ft/11,287m) on the North side of Mt. Bak­er. Approx­i­mate dri­ving time is 3 hours. The hike to base camp at 6,000ft/1,829m takes 3 to 4 hours. You will trav­el through lush ancient forests, high alpine mead­ows, and snow cov­ered areas en route to your high camp. After set­ting up the camp, you will per­form a skills assess­ment. You will spend the after­noon learn­ing the essen­tials of glac­i­er trav­el: ice axe / cram­pon tech­nique, self arrest, roped team trav­el, route find­ing, and haz­ard assess­ment. The remain­der of the evening is spent mak­ing final prepa­ra­tions for the next day’s sum­mit attempt.
