The best time to trek to Everest Base Camp is during the pre-monsoon (Spring) and post-monsoon (Autumn) seasons.
The Spring season (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are considered the best overall trekking seasons due to the clear skies and stable weather. Along the trekking route, you get to witness rhododendron forests in full bloom. Trekkers also get the best views of the mountains during this time.
However, due to the unpredictable weather conditions and the increase in global warming, there can be times, even during the Winter and Monsoon seasons, where trekking conditions can still be favorable.

Is travel insurance mandatory?

Travel and emergency evacuation is mandatory in this trip due to the nature of the hike. The insurance must cover helicopter evacuation too. It is also recommended that you include trip cancellations and flight changes.

What is the fitness level required for this trek?

Accepted Answer

You need to be in good shape and physical condition for this trek. After booking, you will get a training plan which takes 3-4 months. However, you don’t need any previous experience or specific mountaineering skills to trek the EBC.
Additionally to the training, you should have a medical check before the trip. Ask your doctor:
- If high altitude trekking is permissible for your age, fitness level and health condition
- If you have any preexisting medical conditions that can cause problems on the climb
- If any of your medications can affect high altitude acclimatization
- Whether Diamox can be taken with your existing prescription medicines

I hear there are often delays in this trek, what can I expect?

Please note that often the Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu flight gets delayed by a few hours or may even be canceled for one, two, or more days due to unfavorable weather conditions. Such conditions may arise even in the best seasons. Hence, in such cases, you must be prepared for long waits either at Kathmandu or Lukla airports, as this can happen either at the start or end of the trek. Please book travel isurance and a flexible flight ticket to cover for unexpected changes.
