Overview

Join the Seattle Athletic Club community for an unforgettable adventure as you embark on your first volcano summit experience at Mount St. Helens, guided by professionals who will empower you with the skills and confidence needed for success.  

This is a LEVEL 1 trip.  

From the summit, you'll enjoy breathtaking vistas that include views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier, and on clear days even Mt. Adams, along with a fascinating glimpse into the crater below.  

Highlights:  

- Two-day of comprehensive learning experience  

- Summit Mt. St. Helens  

- Proper usage of crampons and ice axes, as well as techniques for glissading.  

- Winter route skills for conquering volcanic summits  

- Winter shelter construction  

Note:  

- While beginners are welcome, it's important to note that a reasonable level of physical fitness is recommended to fully enjoy and tackle this journey  

- These dates are tentative and will be confirmed as soon as the guiding company secures permits for the climb. This trip requires a minimum of 6 people to run.  

- THE SIGN-UP DEADLINE FOR THIS TRIP IS 60 DAYS BEFORE THE START OF THE TRIP.

Itinerary

Day 1: Snow skills camp

You will meet your guide at the park and ride from where they'll transport you to the trailhead. You will hike to campsite and reach around noon. Along the way, you'll traverse a second-growth forest and encounter a stunning waterfall before arriving at your designated campsite.  

At this point, your guide will instruct you on winter shelter construction and provide the essential skills required for a comfortable and safe overnight stay in the backcountry. Following the camp setup, you'll enjoy lunch and prepare for snow skills training, which will prepare you for the climb scheduled for the following day.  

During today's session, you will receive instruction on the proper usage of crampons and ice axes, as well as techniques for glissading.  

Distance: ~ 2.5 mi/4 km  

Elevation Gain: ~ 1,500-2,000 ft/457-610 m  

Meals: Lunch and Dinner

On day 1, for 1 day

You will be camping at the base camp on double occupancy basis and all group equipment, such as tents and stoves is covered in the trip's cost. If you prefer to have a single-person tent, you have the option to rent one for an additional fee.
