Day 1: Snow Camping

Meet at a Park and Ride in the greater Seattle area. The course location is dependent upon weather and avalanche risk, and your gudie will notify you of the meeting time and location before the start of your trip. Once at the trailhead, your gudie will go over the route plan, identifying avalanche terrain and how to avoid it. You will then travel to camp, marking the route with a GPS or wands if there is off-trail travel or travel in fresh snow. Once you are at the camp, participants learn how to fortify your camp set-up with snow walls, in the event of high winds and blowing snow. Learn how to collect snow for melting water, how to position stoves for oxygen intake, and how to efficiently utilize fuel.
