Overview

On this trek you will climb the tallest peak in the African continent, Mt. Kilimanjaro, via the Machame route. Also know as the Wiskey route, Machame was the first camping route established to hike Mount Kilimanjaro.

The region of Machame was initially referred to as the Great African Giant. Its' steep hills and ever-changing climate will challenge the most skilled and adventurous hiking enthusiasts. Nevertheless, the mesmerising views and diverse ecosystems as you ascend the Giant will enthral you to the wonders of the region.

The route starts with a short drive from Moshi town to Machame gate before the hike starts. The route begins from the south heads to west and then later traverses to underneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field before you summit from south-east of the mountain.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Tanzania and Gear Check

Once you arrive at the airport, you will be met by the driver from your guiding company, with a sign bearing your name. They will then drive you to your hotel in Arusha for dinner and overnight. In the afternoon or evening your mountain guide will meet you for a Kilimanjaro climb briefing and Kilimanjaro equipment check

Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp, Distance: 11km/7miles, Hiking Time: 5-7hours, Elevation: 5,380ft to 9,350ft

Day 3: Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Cave Camp, Distance: 5km/3miles, Hiking Time: 5-6hours, Elevation: 9,350ft to 12,500ft

Day 4: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Valley, Distance: 10km/6miles, Hiking Time: 6-8hours, Eleven:12,500ft to 15,190ft to 12,795ft

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp, Distance: 9km/5miles, Hiking Time: 6-7hours, Elevation: 12,795ft to 15,331ft

Day 6: Summit attempt - Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and back down to Mweka Camp: Distance: 5km/3mi up and 13km/8mi down, Elevation: 15,331ft to 19,340ft and 19,340 to 10,170ft

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate: Distance: 10km/6mi, Hiking time: 3-4 hours, Drive time: 2-3 hour, Elevation: 10,170ft to 5,380ft

Day 8: Departure or onward safari adventure
