Overview

On this trek, you will ascend the highest peak on the African continent, Mount Kilimanjaro, via the Machame route. Also known as the Whiskey route, Machame was the first camping route established for hiking Mount Kilimanjaro.

The Machame region was initially referred to as the Great African Giant. Its steep hills and ever-changing climate will challenge even the most skilled and adventurous hiking enthusiasts. Nevertheless, the mesmerizing views and diverse ecosystems as you ascend the Giant will captivate you with the wonders of the region.

The journey begins with a short drive from Moshi town to the Machame gate before the hike commences. The route starts from the south, veers westward, and later traverses beneath Kilimanjaro's southern ice field before you reach the summit from the southeast of the mountain.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Tanzania and Gear Check

After your arrival at the airport, a driver from your local guiding company will be there to greet you, holding a sign with your name. They will then transport you to your hotel in Arusha, where you will have dinner and stay overnight. In the afternoon or evening, your mountain guide will meet with you to provide a Kilimanjaro climb briefing and conduct an equipment check.

Day 2: Machame Gate (1,743m/5,718ft) to Machame Camp (2,835m/9,350ft)

Day 3: Machame Camp (2,835m/9,350ft) to Shira Cave Camp (3,750m/12,303ft)

Day 4: Shira Camp (3,750m/12,303ft) to Lava Tower (4,630m/15,190ft) to Barranco Valley (3,900m/12,795ft)

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,900m/12,795ft) to Karanga Camp (3,995m/ 13,107ft)

Day 6: Karanga Camp (3,995m/13,107ft) to Barafu Hut (4,673m/15,331ft)

Day 7: Summit attempt - Barafu Camp (4,673m/15,331ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,340ft) and back down to Mweka Camp (2,835m/9,350ft)

Day 8: Mweka Camp (2,835m/9,350ft) to Mweka Gate (1,743m/5,718ft)

Day 9: Departure or onward safari adventure
