Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

duration: 15 days

difficulty: Moderate

group size: 6

experience: Intermediate

Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is highlighted by the base camp–a center stage that stands on a glacial basin amidst a natural amphitheater of mountains. It is also known as the Annapurna sanctuary trek because the region is a well-preserved area, home to 1,226 species of flowering plants, 102 mammals, 474 birds, 39 reptiles and 22 amphibians. Furthermore, the mountains Annapurna (8,091m) and Gangapurna (7,455m) are regarded with reverence and the entire region is considered sacred.

When you trek through the Annapurna region, you spend most of the time within the conservation area. It begins at the warm and humid lower and mid-hills reaching up to the freezing mid-Himalaya. The change in vegetation and wildlife becomes apparent as you progress on your trek, which is also embraced by life in the quaint villages, the culture of its inhabitants setting them apart. The maximum altitude you ascend during the trek is 4,130m which is not perilously high. The trail has been one of the most frequented in Nepal for decades. Ease of access, lower risk and a rich trekking experience have lured trekkers, who are keen to exact the best experience from the restrictive set of days they come with.
