Mt Shasta 2 Day Climb with Snowskills Course

duration: 2 days

difficulty: Strenuous

group size: 9

experience: Beginner

Overview

Climb Mt. Shasta, a beautiful volcano in the Cascade range, standing tall at 14,179 feet. The Avalanche Gulch route used for this climb can be a great introduction to mountaineering for beginner mountaineers who are in good physical condition.

Prior to your climb, on a pre-determined date, you will do a snowskills course with guides who will teach you the skills necessary for your climb covering skills such as selecting clothing and equipment for a snow climb, how to walk in balance with an ice axe, traversing a slope, kicking steps, self arrest techniques, plunge stepping, glissading, assessing snow conditions and crampon use.

Then you will climb this mountain under the guidance of your guides over 2 days and learn skills such as snow camping and practice snow walking techniques, roping up, self arrest and more along the way with the group gear provided by the guides.

Whether this is your first 14er or your first glaciated climb, you are sure to get a taste of mountaineering with a hike to basecamp, followed by an early alpine start on the following day and push to the summit, before descending down the mountain.

This climb is led by the SWS Mountain guides who hold the permits to operate on Shasta-Trinity National Forest and operates on a non-discriminatory basis.

Itinerary

Day 1: Meet the guides, equipment check and base camp approach

On the first day of your climb, you will meet your guides and all the group members in the guiding company office at Mt Shasta. After a brief introduction, the guides will conduct a complete pack check and distribute the group gear to each participant.

Once this is done, you will then carpool to the trailhead at Bunny Flat (6,860 feet) on Mt. Shasta’s south side. You will start hiking from the trailhead to base camp, which will likely be high camp (9,800 feet) just below Helen Lake.

Distance: 2.5-3.5 miles, Elevation gain: 1,500-2,500 feet

After getting some rest, you will be spending your afternoon refreshing your snow skills and use of ice axe and crampons.

You will then retire early in preparation for an alpine start on summit day (up by 1-2:00 am).
